The final week of August is often when the lightness of summer begins to evaporate. Without noticing it, our brains shift back into “office mode”. We start mentally rehearsing back-to-work meetings, anticipating the urgent files of the final quarter, and worrying about objectives yet to be met.

This is where the great end-of-summer paradox plays out: trying to prepare everything in advance in order to “feel ready” for the return actually destroys the peace of our final days of rest. The result? We walk through the office door on the first Monday of September already feeling mentally fatigued — before we have even opened our first email.

Why does your brain make a false start?

Consider the example of S.M., an HR manager. She has one week of leave remaining. She is physically by the sea — but mentally, she is already sitting at her desk.

In the early evening, watching the sunset, her mind races: “Monday morning I absolutely need to finalise the new hire’s contract, but I also have the budget review with the leadership team at 2pm. If the manager hasn’t sent me their approvals, I’ll fall behind. Maybe I should send a quick Slack message now to get ahead of it…“

In cognitive psychology, this is known as projective mental load. The brain dislikes uncertainty and emptiness. To reassure itself, it attempts to solve problems in advance that do not yet exist.

S.M. believes she is being organised and proactive. In reality, she is keeping her nervous system on alert. She is making a false start.

Yet the research is clear: performance and creativity in the weeks that follow depend entirely on the quality of that final period of disconnection. It is by remaining fully present in the moment during the last days of rest that we replenish the cognitive resources needed to handle the real challenges of September.

The Zeigarnik effect: why our brains cannot let go

This need to anticipate is reinforced by a well-established psychological mechanism: the Zeigarnik Effect. Studies have shown that our brains retain unfinished or interrupted tasks far more readily than completed ones.

Every file left “on hold” before going on holiday acts as an open loop in the mind. Until those loops are closed or scheduled externally, the brain continues to consume energy in the background monitoring them. To deactivate this mechanism, the answer is not to work more — it is simply to reassure the brain by giving it a precise appointment in the diary for when you return.

The ultimate checklist for a smooth and stress-free return

To close these mental loops and protect your final days of summer, here is a straightforward checklist for organising your return without disruption.

Schedule a buffer morning. Block out your first morning back with no meetings, no calls, and no team check-ins before Monday afternoon — or better still, Tuesday morning. Use that time to sort through your emails, reorient yourself, and land without pressure.

Use the external planning technique. Instead of ruminating on a complex issue, write it down in a notebook or your project management tool: “I will address file X on Tuesday 2 September at 10am.” The simple act of assigning a specific time is enough to immediately free up the mental space occupied by the Zeigarnik Effect.

Apply the rule of three priorities. When you return, everything will feel urgent. It is not. Identify just three critical tasks to accomplish in your first week back. Everything else can — and should — wait until your routine is re-established.

Carry a summer ritual into September. Who decided that the return to work must mean the end of wellbeing? Keep having your morning coffee outside, going for a walk at lunchtime, or reading for a while at the end of the day. Preserving one small summer habit makes the transition considerably easier.

Take care of your starting line

The return to work is not a sprint that begins in mid-August. It is a long-distance run, and what matters is arriving at the starting line with a fresh, available mind.

As managers and HR professionals, you have a role to play by example. By allowing yourself to fully experience your final days of rest without pre-loading September’s demands, you show your teams the way. The lasting performance of an organisation is built on its people’s ability to respect their own cycles of recovery. Take care of how you end your summer, your return will be all the better for it.

Discover CTPI-R, a tool specifically designed for assessing managers.

Here we are.
